The cold season has already arrived in many parts of the country. While Houston is usually spared from the brutal winters that our northern friends experience, fall and winter is still a great time to spruce up your house!

Taking a little bit of time to winterize your home can save you a lot of time, and money, later on. Check out these tips for preparing your home for the fall and winter.

  1. Check window and door weather stripping for damage.

  2. Wrap exterior water pipes or hose bibs with heating tape.

  3. Clean your gutters.

  4. Check your roof for damage or leaks.

  5. Consider replacing your roof if it is necessary—fall and winter tend to be a bit slower for roofing companies

  6. Fill cracks in your driveway and foundation.

  7. Check attic insulation for pest damage.

  8. Have your AC serviced.

  9. Check your chimney for obstructions and make sure your damper is working.

  10. Aerate and fertilize your lawn.

  11. Change the air filters in your HVAC system.

  12. Change smoke detector batteries.

  13. Clean and store outdoor furniture.

  14. Have landscaping pruned and put fresh mulch down.

  15. Evaluate what outdoor plants may need protection in the event of a freeze.

  16. Change your ceiling fan direction.

  17. Clean humidifiers before using.

  18. Check the condition of your pool cover and equipment.
